The Earth is full of mysteries. Many of its mysteries could not be solved. Scientists have been working to prove the causes. It includes Bermuda Triangle, The Stonehenge etc. Through the history, many crimes have gone unsolved due to its mysterious nature and lack of evidence to take an action. All the researches lead to a dead end. In This blog, we will look into 10 of these kinds of mysterious and unsolved cases.
- The Mary Celeste:
Mary Celeste is an unsolved mystery where nobody knows what actually happened to its entire crew. Mary Celeste was Canadian-built, American-registered merchant ship that was discovered deserted in the Atlantic Ocean.
On 5th December 1872, David Morehouse, the captain of a British Ship, Dei Gratia, and his crew discover a ship nearby. The ship was Mary Celeste. He recognised that it is his friend Benjamin Briggs’s ship. The Captain tried to contact that ship, but nobody responded.
Concerned by that, the captain himself got onto that ship. He saw something that left him shocked. All the crew members of the ship were gone. All their belongings were left in that boat. There was no sign of any fire, of damage to that ship. The crew found that 2 of the pressure measuring pumps were leaking and the bottom of the ship filled with water upto 4 feet. The only rescue boat and its rope went missing. It was carrying 1700 liters of industrial alcohol, which was untouched. There was plenty of food and water that could last for 6 months. David Morehouse searched the cabin of the Captain. They found out that the navigation instruments and the ship’s papers were gone.
Mary Celeste started its journey on 7th November, 1872, from New York to Genoa. It carried its captain, Benjamin Briggs, with his wife, Sarah Briggs and his 2-year-old daughter, Sophia Briggs and other 7 other crew members. All of the crew members were missing. What happened to them is still a mystery to this date.
2. The Voynich Manuscript:
The Voynich Manuscript is a book that is filled with unknown species of plant diagrams, written in an unknown language. The book is named after Wilfrid Voynich, who acquired it in 1912. It is believed that it had been written in early 15th century. Voynich Manuscript is a book of 240 pages. It is filled illustrations of unknown plant species, star constellations, intricate alchemical symbols and bathing women, along with a manuscript that couldn’t be deciphered by various linguists and historians. The Origin and the contents of this book still remain a mystery. It is called the world’s most mysterious book.
Various Segments:
The writings on the manuscript do not match with any known alphabetic system. This book includes botanical, astronomical, balneological, cosmological and pharmaceutical illustrations. The botanical sections, which covers a majority of its pages, depict a numerous plants which do not match with any known species. The astronomical segment of this manuscript, is adorned with diagrams, having a striking resemblance to celestial maps, highlighting sun, moon, stars, and planets. These diagrams are often interspersed with human figures or cryptic symbols.
The Cosmological section is filled with enigmatic circular diagrams, representing multiple layers of the universe. The Pharmaceutical Segment showcases illustrated plant components. It also illustrates different vessels. This evoke a dedicated manual of alchemy or remedies from herbs.
A small Balneology segment, of the Manuscript, present illustrations with female figures immersed in a network of interlinked pools. This points at ritualistic or therapeutic water ceremonies.
The digital copy of the book has been posted on the internet for the enthusiasts who wants to solve the mystery. This book has been researched by many scientists, linguists but they were never able to decode it. It is also believed that it is written in a long lost language.
3. The Bermuda Triangle:
The Bermuda Triangle is a famous mysterious part of the ocean. It is also called as “Graveyard of Atlantic”, “Devil’s Triangle”, “Sea of Doom” etc. The word Bermuda Triangle was first used in 1964, in an article called “The Deadly Bermuda Triangle”, by Vincent H. Gaddis. It is a place where more than 100 of ships and aircrafts have gone missing. This place lies between Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda in the shape of a triangle. It covers more than 500,000 sq. miles. The Bermuda Triangle is so famous that many games have been created, many movies have been made and many songs have also been written.
It was first identified in 1492 by The Sailor, Christopher Columbus. When he was passing by that area, he said that his compass had stopped working. He also stated that while he was on his ship, he saw a strange light that resembles a ball of fire in the sky, falling into the ocean. The Bermuda Triangle caught attention in 1945, with the disappearance of Flight 19 which was carrying 13 soldiers. While they were travelling, their compasses suddenly stopped working and the climate was dangerous. The flight went missing and was never found again. Neither the bodies of the crew nor the flight were found.
Another horrifying incident took place in 1918, which Involved The U.S.S Cyclops. It was one of the America’s fastest and the strongest ships of the U.S. Navy at that time. It carried 306 people and 11000 tonnes of Manganese. The estimated time for the journey was 9 days. The U.S.S Cyclops started from Baltimore to Brazil. It transmitted the message “Weather Fair, All Well”. It was the last ever message sent to the U.S Navy. The ship was completely disappeared. No traces of that ship were ever found.
Scientific Theories:
Scientists have been working tediously towards finding the causes for these incidents. In this aspect, few theories were formed. One of the theories is based upon magnetism. For the past 200 to 300 years, the Magnetic North pole and Geographical North pole called as Agonic Lines, were found at the Bermuda Triangle area.
The second theory states that the area of Bermuda Triangle is very “Shallow”. Any ships that had passed through this area, got stuck and were never able to get out alive.
The Third Theory is that this area has one of the highest rates of hurricane in the world. The Bermuda triangle lies near Florida, which is one of the highest hurricanes causing area in the U.S.A.
Scientists came to conclusion that all the incidents that were mentioned above were caused by these theories.
4. The Zodiac Killer:
The Zodiac killer case is one of the most mysterious serial killer cases ever. The Zodiac Killer is the infamous serial killer in the Northern California, America. The killer left cryptic messages written in code at the crime scene.
The first killing took place in December 20, 1968. The victims were 16 year old Betty Lou Jenson and 17 year old David Arthur Faraday, who were on their first date, in Lake Herman road. The unknown stranger came from the darkness and killed the unsuspecting teenagers, multiple times. Faraday was shot in his head and Jenson suffered fatal injuries on her back. Their bodies were found by a passerby.
On July 4th 1969, his second attack commenced. 22 year old Darlene Ferrin and 19 year old Michael Megeau, were celebrating the Independence Day, about four miles from the Lake Herman Road murder site. An unknown car parked behind Ferrin’s car in the parking lot. The killer reached the passenger side of the car, with a torch and without notifying, opened fire fatally wounding Ferrin, Megeau survived the attack with several injuries. He then helped the police to draw a portrait of the killer. It was a Figure in a dark hooded outfit, with a shock of light brown hair, aged in his late twenties. The figure was standing approximately 5 foot 8 inches tall, weighing around 200 pounds.
On August 1st, 1969. The Vallejo police received letters with identical handwriting, taking responsibility in the Herman Road murders and Blue Rock Springs Park. The letter included the details about the crimes. The letters were signed with a cross-hair target, which resembles how the murders were carried out with a sharp precision. Each letter contained a cipher and a cryptic puzzle, which will continue to taunt the authorities. He also warned that if these puzzles failed to get published in the newspapers, he will cruise weekends killing lonely people in the night. Donald and Bettye Harden, solve the cryptic puzzle in the letter. The solution revealed a very chilling message.
On September 27th, 1969, Bryan Hartnel and Cecilia Shepard, were at a picnic in Lake Beryessa, Napa County. A Hooded man, standing 5 foot 11 inches approached them. He was wearing a black, executioner style hood. He was also wearing a sunglasses and a cross-hair symbol on his chest. He made them hostile and made each other tie their hands themselves. He then suddenly started stabbing them. The killer left a handwritten letter in Hartnel’s car, that included his signature cross-hair symbol and the dates of the previous murders. Cecilia was dead two days later and Bryan was admitted in a hospital where he recovered. Hartnel described the entire incident to the police and the press.
The Fourth Murder was committed on October 11th, 1969. The killer took the cab of Paul Stine, in San Francisco. The killer then shot Paul in the point blank range killing him. The killer then cleaned the cab and tore a piece of Stine’s shirt. Three teenagers were witnessing the scene from a distance and they informed the police. The killer was not found. A few days later, the Zodiac Killer sent a letter with Stine’s piece of shirt enclosed in it, proving that he had done the crime.On November 8th, 1969, the killer sent another letter that contained a cryptic code. This code hasn’t been solver till date. In that letter, killer wrote that the code includes his name.
Till date, many suspects were listed but none of them were confirmed as the Zodiac Killer. The true identity of the killer and the message of the cryptic codes still remain a mystery.
